Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Approved Electrician to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

A Preservation Electrician is responsible for maintaining, testing, and preserving electrical systems and equipment that are not in active use or are being stored prior to installation, commissioning, or reuse. This role is common in construction, industrial, oil & gas, and large infrastructure projects where equipment must remain in optimal condition during storage or idle periods.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment Preservation & Maintenance

  • Carry out preservation activities on electrical equipment such as motors, switchgear, transformers, and control systems
  • Conduct periodic inspections to ensure equipment remains in good condition
  • Apply preservation techniques (e.g., energisation, dehumidification, lubrication, cleaning)

Inspection & Testing

  • Perform electrical testing including insulation resistance (IR), continuity, and functional checks
  • Record test results and identify deterioration or damage
  • Ensure all preserved equipment meets manufacturer and project specifications

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain detailed records of inspections, tests, and preservation activities
  • Update preservation logs, checklists, and reports in line with company procedures
  • Report defects, damage, or risks to supervisors

Fault Identification & Rectification

  • Diagnose faults in electrical systems during preservation checks
  • Carry out minor repairs or escalate issues as required
  • Ensure equipment remains safe and operable for future commissioning

Compliance & Safety

  • Follow all health, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Adhere to electrical standards and company procedures (e.g., permit-to-work systems, isolation procedures)
  • Ensure proper storage conditions (temperature, humidity, cleanliness) are maintained

Coordination & Support

  • Work closely with commissioning teams, engineers, and site management
  • Assist in preparing equipment for installation or commissioning when required
  • Support audits and inspections related to preservation activities

Required Skills & Qualifications
Education & Certification:

  • NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • CompEx (desirable for hazardous areas)
  • ECS/CSCS card or equivalent
  • 18th Edition Wiring Regulations (BS 7671)

Experience:

  • Experience in electrical maintenance, construction, or commissioning
  • Familiarity with preservation procedures in industrial or construction environments
  • Knowledge of electrical equipment such as motors, panels, and instrumentation systems

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to read electrical drawings and schematics
  • Competence in electrical testing equipment and methods
  • Understanding of preservation standards and manufacturer guidelines

Soft Skills:

  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good record-keeping and reporting ability
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Working Conditions:

  • Site-based role (construction or industrial environments)
  • May involve working at height, in confined spaces, or outdoors
  • Use of PPE required at all times
