Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This is a dual-function, hands-on role with the post holder’s primary responsibility being the safe, secure, and compliant processing of all inbound and outbound cargo freight through the airport and cargo facility.

The role involves participating in all applicable warehouse operations and activities, including X-ray screening, secondary searching, loading and unloading vehicles and trailers, pallet build-up and break-down, and maintaining a clean and organised warehouse environment.

In addition, the post holder will support the wider airport operation by ensuring compliance with company policies, airline requirements, security regulations, and all relevant aviation and regulatory standards. This may involve undertaking duties within the Security or Operations Department during periods when support is not required within the cargo facility.


2.0 Key Responsibilities

2.1

As a Cargo Operative, ensure high standards are maintained in line with the Company’s values, behaviours, and leadership expectations.

2.2

Perform security screening of air cargo using X-ray machines and other approved screening methods as required.

2.3

Complete accurate screening records and maintain logs to support audit requirements and regulatory compliance.

2.4

Ensure cargo is correctly sorted, handled, and moved within the cargo facility and airside operational areas.

2.5

Ensure cargo is appropriately labelled, documented, and stored in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.

2.6

Use scanning equipment and associated software systems to record shipments and maintain security declarations.

2.7

Complete all daily operational logs and checks, including:

  • Start-up and testing of X-ray machines and associated equipment.
  • Inspection of access doors for serviceability.
  • Inspection of forklifts, pump trucks, and operational tools for serviceability.
  • Inventory checks of consumables, packing materials, pallets, and related equipment.
2.8

Prepare cargo paperwork when required in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring all documentation is complete and correct prior to cargo release.

2.9

Ensure housekeeping and hygiene standards are maintained at all times and assist with stock control monitoring.

2.10

Maintain the cleanliness and presentation of the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) inspection facility.

2.11

Maintain the cleanliness and presentation of the Port Health inspection facility.

2.12

Maintain full adherence to all security protocols and screening procedures.

2.13

Maintain full adherence to all Health and Safety policies and procedures while promoting a positive and proactive “Just Culture”.

2.14

Demonstrate flexibility in working hours and provide cover for other operatives when required.

2.15

Build and maintain effective relationships with key internal and external customers.

2.16

Undertake any additional duties that may arise from time to time and that are within the post holder’s capability, ensuring business continuity.


2.17 Safety Responsibilities

Whilst at work, the post holder is expected to comply with and support the Company’s Safety Management System (SMS) and fulfil the responsibilities outlined in Sections 7 and 8 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

2.17.1

Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work.

2.17.2

Co-operate with Company management so far as is necessary to enable the Company to fulfil its statutory duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and all other relevant legislation.

2.17.3

Not intentionally or recklessly interfere with, or misuse, anything provided in the interests of health, safety, or welfare.

2.17.4

Comply with the more specific requirements contained within the Safety Management System and associated documents.


2.18 Environmental Responsibilities

Whilst at work, the post holder is expected to consider how their individual and collective actions may affect the Airport Company’s ongoing compliance with environmental guidance and legislation.

2.18.1

Take responsibility for their actions and co-operate with Airport Company Management to minimise and prevent potential environmental pollution.

2.18.2

Not intentionally or recklessly interfere with, or misuse, plant, equipment, procedures, or instructions that could lead to a pollution incident.


3.0 Additional Accountabilities

3.1

The following activities may be undertaken when required, or at the request of the Airport Duty Manager, Cargo Manager, or other Teesside International Airport management personnel:

  • Provide cover for any security role for which the individual is trained and competent.
  • When required, oversee and assist Teesside International Airport (TIA) Ramp Operations (Ground Handling) with activities for all cargo aircraft operating at MME.
  • Ensure all required and serviceable ground handling equipment is available, including:
    • Ground Power Unit (GPU)
    • Aircraft steps
    • High loader
    • Pushback tug
  • Assist the Operations Department with tasks as required across any area of the airport.
  • Undertake any additional ad hoc duties that may arise from time to time and are within the post holder’s capability, ensuring business continuity.

General Statement

The responsibilities of the post may change over time to reflect the evolving needs of the cargo facility, airport operations, and associated services, as well as the personal development needs of the post holder. This job description will be subject to regular review and amendment as necessary.
