The Role

As part of the wider investment leadership team, this role provides an opportunity to shape the department’s strategic direction for inward investment, while providing more direct exposure to investors and wider HMG by leading efforts to advise client-facing teams on issues (incl. tax, skills and visas) relating to the investment environment.

This role was established at the end of 2018 and now sits at the heart of the senior leadership team in Strategy and Investment. It provides a unique opportunity to forge close relationships across business and Government and deliver an exciting programme of work centred around the UK’s investment promotion and performance.

About the Strategy, Environment and Planning Team

  • Performance, support services & capability: This team works with colleagues across our investment network to define our objectives and track delivery against them; contract manages our outsourced support services; and delivers our specialist capability offer
  • Investment environment: Support investors (directly or through our client-facing teams) to address cross-cutting queries including tax, visa/migration, skills that relate to the business environment for investment; also, uses our intelligence from investors, working with colleagues across HMG, to inform policy that impacts upon the attractiveness of the UK for investment.
  • Strategic projects: Leads DIT’s strategic approach to deliver investment. Projects scoped with sponsorship from the investment minister, DGSI DG and/or investment director to address specific challenges facing the organisation.

Job description

Key Responsibilities 

  • Working closely alongside four other deputy directors, you will influence a significant investment portfolio spanning policy, strategy, implementation and operations in order to drive the strategic direction of the directorate. Your efforts will be key in driving a new data driven and collaborative agenda that will span the directorate’s 3000 staff located across more than 100 countries. ​
  • This is a fast paced, challenging, innovative and exciting portfolio of work and provides excellent opportunities for senior level personal and professional development in a leading Government department. ​
  • Over the next year the role will oversee the implementation of the Government’s Foreign Direct Investment strategy and its future development to ensure it delivers highest economic impact for the UK. ​
  • Absolutely key to the role will be the relationship between you and the senior leadership team, in particular the Director General in Strategy and Investment who will directly oversee and strongly influence this work. ​
  • In this role you will be responsible for development and delivery of strategic initiatives in support of our investment aims and managing performance of FDI through our global network. ​
  • You will manage a function of c.30 people and will report to the Director for Investment​

  • Outstanding leadership skills –  An inspirational and empowering leader who demonstrates confidence and experience in corporate delivery, staff engagement and builds high performing teams.
  • Ability to use data analysis and business intelligence, identify key drivers of performance to deliver insights and strategic development.
  • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and influencing skills with a proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a range of senior stakeholders up to Board/Ministerial level.
  • A proven track record of delivering strategies and complex business change programmes in large dispersed organisations.
  • Excellent stakeholder and relationship management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships both internally and externally and foster collaborations across organisational boundaries.

Desirable Criteria 

  • Experience of working in investment promotion / delivery would be advantageous to this position
  • Experience of managing delivery through both contracted services and owned channels.
