Summary

The US, Services, Investment and Digital Directorate sits within the Trade Negotiations Group at DIT. We are at the forefront of developing the UK’s international trade policy and negotiating trade agreements around the world.

We cover:
• Negotiation of bilateral free trade agreements
• Policy development and strategy
• Multilateral negotiations
• WTO engagement on services, investment and digital
• International discussions in the G7, UN, and OECD

Job description

This is an exciting and challenging role at the heart of the UK’s international trade policy and negotiations. The Deputy Director will jointly lead a large team (circa 60) of negotiators and policy officials developing and delivering strategy and policy across a series of bilateral and multilateral negotiation contexts.

You will be responsible for the negotiation of services provisions in Free Trade Agreements, and at the WTO, providing oversight of policy development and strategic and tactical leadership across a series of fast paced, parallel negotiations.

The team covers: mobility, services sectors, global services strategy, and cross-border trade in services. Working with your co-lead, and across the Services, Investment and Digital Cluster, you will deliver a clear and compelling strategic narrative for UK services trade, ensuring a coherent vision within each detailed policy area to support this. You will drive support for your approach from within DIT, across other government departments and with stakeholders.

You will play a pivotal role in the Directorate’s wider Senior Leadership Team, championing corporate initiatives and contributing to the positive and inclusive culture of the Directorate.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate evidence of:

Essential Criteria
• First-hand leadership experience of trade policy.
• Negotiation skills and experience in an international context.
• An excellent track record of strategic thinking with experience of translating strategy and/or policy into successful delivery.
• Finely tuned judgement with highly-developed communicating and influencing skills. A proven ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with a wider range of internal and external stakeholders.
• Strong corporate leadership skills in a complex and uncertain environment, with an ability to work collaboratively with a co-lead to inspire, engage and motivate a large, diverse team.

Desirable Criteria
• Experience of working on trade in services.
