About the employer

Boulby Mine is a 200-hectare site located just south-east of the village of Boulby, on the north-east coast of the North York Moors in Loftus, North Yorkshire England. It is run by Cleveland Potash Limited, which is now a subsidiary of Israel Chemicals Ltd. In early 2016, polyhalite mining commenced. ICL Group Ltd are seeking a hardworking individual to join their team as a successful Metal Fabricator apprentice. The successful candidate will gain a Level 3 Metal Fabricator apprenticeship.

What will the apprentice be doing?

Practical experience will be gained in the four main working areas of the Mine i.e., Processing, Shaft and Winders, Infrastructure and Polyhalite Production. Whilst all the Processing activities are carried out on surface, all the Infrastructure and Production working areas are Underground. For Shaft and Winders, most of the activities takes place in the winder house located on surface, however from time-to-time maintenance and repair work is carried in the shaft and underground shaft bottom area.

As a Fabricator Apprentice, you will work closely with ICL team of experienced Tradesman all under the supervision of a responsible Foreman. The responsible Mechanical Operations Engineers will oversee and monitor progress of training in their specific areas.

After a period in a particular section, the Apprentice will be required to develop and present a report to a panel comprising of Engineers and Foremen who will then approve progression and deployment to another section. The report will include:

  • Work Performed during deployment in that section
  • Key skills obtained during that period
  • Details of at least 1 key major job carried out
  • Any Recommendations

Key Equipment:

By end of the apprenticeship period, it is expected that the trainee will have acquired basic skills to maintain, troubleshoot and repair of equipment.

  • Processing (Surface) – Conveyors, Pumps, Screens, Screw Feeders, Crushers, Drying and Coating System, Compaction Circuits
  • Mining (Underground) – The maintenance and repairs to the direct mining equipment comprising of Continuous Miners, Shuttle Cars, Feeder Breakers and Bolters. Time will also be spent in the equipment Rebuild Bay (BUB), where this direct mining equipment are stripped and rebuild
  • Infrastructure (Underground) – Divided into three main areas, Pumping, Diesel Workshop and Conveyor belts
  • Shaft and Winders – Consists of 3 Winders and Shafts – No1 Rock Winder and Shaft (+ – 1200m deep), No2 Man Winder and Shaft (+ – 1200m deep) and No3 Tailings Winder (+ – 140m deep)

  • On and off the job training
  • Level 3 Metal Fabricator apprenticeship
  • Day release at college or training provider

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

Depending on the circumstances of the business upon completion of the apprenticeship programme there could be a potential position of employment available.
