Job Description

An exciting new opportunity has arisen in our department to allow for specialist pharmacist rotational posts between our cardiology and critical care departments. You will join our dynamic team of pharmacists and medicines management technicians in order to provide a robust pharmacy service to the wards.

The successful candidate will work full time hours 8.30am-5pm Monday – Friday, and will also be included in extended hours, weekend and on-call rotas, which are currently;

  • 1 day weekend working once every 5 weeks (reimbursed with a weekday off the following week),
  • 1 ‘late night’ shift every 2 weeks (working hours 9am-5.30pm),
  • On call duties on a rolling rota basis, approximately 1 in 40.

Hospital services are provided from two main sites, the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton. The James Cook University Hospital is designated as a Major Trauma Centre and as a Tertiary Care centre.

Main duties of the job

This is a challenging and dynamic role that will allow successful applicants to strengthen their clinical knowledge and expertise, whilst also enhancing their consultation and assessment skills. Additionally you will also be able to develop your negotiation, influencing, leadership and management skills. In doing so, you will be required to;

  • Act as a positive role model for medicines management and medicines optimisation for pharmacy colleagues and other health care professionals,
  • Utilise transcribing or prescribing skills effectively to enhance patient care and patient safety,
  • Regularly participate in clinical audit and service improvements within the relevant clinical areas,
  • Continually monitor performance and productivity, developing and piloting new ways of working to improve efficiency and patient outcomes,
  • Be involved in the preparation of policies and procedures,
  • Be involved in risk reporting and management,
  • Provide relevant and up to date education and training to pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.

You will be part of an enthusiastic pharmacy team working across 2 general intensive care units (each with 8 level 3 beds), 1 cardiology intensive care unit (12 level 3 beds) and a general high dependency unit (16 level 2 beds).

Person Specification



  • Previous experience as a hospital pharmacist or provisionally registered pharmacist
  • Evidence of continuing professional development


  • Relevant hospital based experience, with evidence of time in cardiology



  • Master’s Degree in Pharmacy
  • Registered Pharmacist or provisionally registered pharmacist who has sat the GPHC assessment in March 2021 and has experience working in hospital pharmacy


  • Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy and Independent prescriber qualifications
