We are looking for a newly qualified, or more experienced nurses, who are interested in gaining experience within our Orthopaedic wards who are ambitious, motivated and enthusiastic and can demonstrate at interview a kind and compassionate attitude along with a desire to provide effective and efficient care.

Main duties of the job

Within this post there will be the opportunity to rotate to further develop knowledge and skills relating to Orthopaedic patients. We provide high quality Orthopaedic care and give structured support and development to all our nurses including a tailored induction at the start, a period of supernumerary status tailored to every individual’s needs and we will support you in conjunction with an allocated ‘buddy’.

The three Orthopaedic wards specialise in elective and emergency pathways predominantly Trauma and Orthopaedics, Fragility Fracture, Joint Replacement and Spinal Surgery and some general surgery on ward 4.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Ward 32- Fragility Fracture Ward

Providing orthopaedic and medical care to our patients. The aim of dual care is to correct the orthopaedic problem and determine if there are any medical factors evident which may be attributed to the injury occurring. The clientele are primarily elderly individuals with complex needs and co-morbidities with a high percentage having some form of dementia diagnosis of which we manage by putting the individuals needs of each patient first. The ward is supported by Nurse Practitioners which are integral to the team

  • Ward 33- Trauma

Providing care for patients with Orthopaedic injuries, specialising in younger patients with Orthopaedic trauma injuries. The ward provides pre and post-operative care following wrist, ankle, spinal fractures etc. and also including elective patients (waiting list) which can include any joint replacement, hip, knee, ankle, shoulder etc. or patients having spinal surgery. The ward works closely with nurse practitioners from the trauma and spinal teams who are an integral due to the pace of the environment.

  • Ward 4- Elective

Based at Hartlepool this is a nurse led unit caring for patients post operatively who have had orthopaedic and surgical procedures. These patients have been on a waiting list (elective) and have had a planned procedure rather than a traumatic injury. Ward 4 specialises in hip and knee replacement, however are planning to extend services to include some spinal and hand surgery. Ward 4 also care for patients following general, gynaecology, breast and urological surgery. You will work closely with the therapy team, joint replacement specialist nurses and advanced nurse practitioners to ensure safe discharge for the patients.

Do you have what it takes? If you wish to further your career in this challenging speciality you will need to have excellent communication skills and a willingness to learn and positive approach to change. Previous experience in this speciality is an advantage but not essential.


Person Specification



  • 1st Level Registration



  • Experience of working within an acute hospital environment (Pre or Post Registration)



  • Good communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Organisational/time management skills



  • Ability to work well within the multidisciplinary team
  • Effective interpersonal skills
