Job Description

We are recruiting for two wood machinist operatives to work with us to produce variety of products from everyday joinery items for major house builders to specialised, one-off bespoke products for individuals or contractors. Training & development will be given to become fully competent using a variety of machines.

What you will do in your working day

The successful applicants would manufacture timber frames used in the construction industry, producing high volume, repetitive, engineered products from timber. Presenting a wide and varied specification for both external and interior applications.

In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with customers, delivery personnel, design office, internal stores.

Wood product manufacturing operatives typically work individually but can also form part of a larger production team and will report to the production supervisor/manager.

Tasks include:

  • Read and interpret specifications, diagrams and work instructions, and following these instructions
  • How to use and gain competency in a range of machinery to perform the task/operation required including static machinery, portable powered tools and hand tools
  • Adhere to quality standards and product accreditation processes for wood product manufacture
  • Maintain machinery and log faults for repair, including greasing
  • Maintain a good level of cleanliness in working areas

The training you will be getting

Training will be provided to achieve the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Wood Product Manufacturing Operative Apprenticeship Standard
  • Functional Skills in maths and English (as required)

Training would be primarily conducted in the work place with frequent visits from your tutors but some training will take place periodically at our training centre (DL1 4QZ).  Here you will learn the theory and practical elements of the course, gaining the knowledge and developing skills to complete the apprenticeship.

What to expect at the end of your apprenticeship

Successful completion of the apprenticeship may lead to full-time employment and/or further training.

Things to consider

You will be required to attend our training centre in Darlington (DL1 4QZ) and you will need to make your own way there for day release training. Travel to and from the employer, based at Unit 1 Hurworth Road, Aycliffe Business Park, Newton Aycliffe, DL5 6UD. The company will remain closed over Christmas period.
